Megan J. Osborne is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of New Mexico. Her work focuses on evolutionary biology, population genetics, and conservation of aquatic species, particularly fishes in arid regions. She employs molecular techniques, transcriptomics, and phylogeographic analysis to study genetic diversity and species survival in fragmented habitats.
Education:
- Ph.D., Biology, La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia (2002)
Research Interests: She investigates how geological and contemporary processes shape genetic diversity in aquatic organisms, with a focus on the Rio Grande Silvery Minnow and Pecos River fishes. Her research integrates historical biogeography, life-history traits, and landscape features to inform conservation strategies.
Background: Osborne began her postdoctoral work at the University of New Mexico in 2002, studying the genetic impacts of river fragmentation. Over a decade of experience in comparative metapopulation studies, she applies innovative genomic approaches to vertebrates including birds, marsupials, and amphibians.
