Thomas E. Reynolds serves as Associate Professor of Theology and Graduate Degree Director at Emmanuel College, University of Toronto. He earned his BA from Taylor University (1985) and MTS/PhD from Vanderbilt University (2001).
His academic credentials include:
- Bachelor of Arts, Taylor University, Upland, IN (1985)
- Master of Theological Studies, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN (2001)
- Doctor of Philosophy, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN (2001)
Reynolds pursues an interdisciplinary theology focused on Christian engagements with global difference. His primary research areas include interreligious dialogue—particularly Muslim-Christian relations post-9/11—and disability studies, where he examines vulnerability, hospitality, and critiques of 'normalcy.' He also contributes significantly to constructive theology (doctrine of God, theological anthropology), theological method, intercultural theology, and Schleiermacher scholarship.
His publications reveal consistent thematic threads: two monographs—'Vulnerable Communion' (2008) on disability theology and 'The Broken Whole' (2006) on global solidarity—anchor a prolific output spanning migration theology, interfaith hermeneutics, and jazz spirituality. Articles from 2009-2019 demonstrate evolving focus on Canadian migration contexts, indigenous spiritualities, and post-secular religious pluralism, always connecting theological concepts to social justice issues like disability inclusion and refugee hospitality.
Reynolds teaches core courses including Mission and Religious Pluralism, Theology/Violence/Peace, and Theological Method. Beyond academia, he is an active jazz pianist—performing professionally since his Nashville graduate years—and enjoys family time, biking, and nature immersion.
