Dr. Thomas E. Cousins is a Professor of Civil Engineering at Clemson University's College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences. He has held faculty positions at Virginia Tech (2007-2014), Auburn University (1990-1996), and Louisiana State University (1987-1990).
- PhD in Structural Engineering from North Carolina State University (1987)
- MS in Civil Engineering from Clemson University (1982)
- BS in Civil Engineering from Clemson University (1978)
His research focuses on bridge engineering, including long-term monitoring, structural behavior analysis, and application of high-performance materials. He has pioneered studies on prestressed concrete structures and experimental research methodologies.
Recent publications highlight his work on ultra-high performance concrete behavior, shear analysis of anchors, and composite bridge systems. These align with his expertise in structural diagnostics and material innovation.
- TRB Design and Construction Group’s 2014 Practice-Ready Paper Award
- TRB Soil Mechanics Section’s 2014 Best Paper Award
- ASCE Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities Outstanding Paper of the Year Award (2006)
Dr. Cousins has supervised numerous research projects funded by agencies like SCDOT and FHWA, focusing on bridge strengthening and structural degradation assessment. His teaching portfolio includes foundational courses in structural analysis and design.
