Thomas Deuel is an Affiliate Assistant Professor at the Swedish Neuroscience Institute and a practicing neurologist specializing in epilepsy and EEG at Swedish Hospital. He holds a B.A. in Molecular Biology from Princeton University and dual M.D./Ph.D. in Neurobiology from Harvard University, where his doctoral work focused on cortical development genetics and neurophysiology. His research integrates neuroscience with artistic practice, including developing brain-music interfaces enabling music composition via neural activity without physical movement. He completed neurology residencies at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital, and fellowships in neurophysiology at Beth Israel Hospital and the University of Washington.
Deuel’s multidisciplinary career includes training in jazz composition at the New England Conservatory and creating sound installations as a sound artist. His work bridges clinical neurology, neuroscience research, and avant-garde art, emphasizing neurotechnology applications for artistic expression and medical innovation.
