Thomas Oboe Lee is a Professor of Music at Boston College since 1990, specializing in composition, music theory, and orchestration. Born in China in 1945, he studied at the University of Pittsburgh (BA), New England Conservatory (MM), and Harvard University (PhD). His extensive body of work includes over 200 compositions across genres, such as symphonies, chamber operas, and jazz-influenced pieces. Notable awards include the Rome Prize, Guggenheim Fellowship, and Kennedy Center Friedheim Award. His music is recorded by major labels like BMOP Sound and Nonesuch, and he collaborates with orchestras worldwide.
Research interests focus on blending classical traditions with modernist and avant-garde techniques, often inspired by literary and visual art. Courses taught include Chromatic Harmony, Jazz Harmony, and Orchestration. Lee’s compositions frequently explore themes of unrequited love, historical narratives, and cultural fusion, reflecting influences from Brazilian and European traditions.
Major achievements include the chamber opera *The Inman Diaries*, commissions from the Boston Symphony Orchestra and New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and residencies at Yaddo and MacDowell Colony.
