Thomas D Rockaway is a Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Louisville's J.B. Speed School of Engineering, where he also serves as Director for the Center for Infrastructure Research. His work focuses on extending the life and improving performance of urban infrastructure systems.
Dr. Rockaway's research interests include urban infrastructure resilience, water and wastewater systems, green infrastructure integration, geotechnical engineering, and groundwater quality assessment. His work spans both theoretical and applied aspects of civil engineering, with particular emphasis on sustainable approaches to infrastructure management.
His recent publications demonstrate expertise in groundwater quality analysis in arid regions and heat transfer in saturated soils, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach that combines civil engineering principles with environmental science. These works indicate strong methodological skills in both probabilistic and deterministic analytical approaches.
Dr. Rockaway has significant professional experience beyond academia, having worked as a geotechnical engineer for a power corporation, as a regional consultant, and with the United States Army Corps of Engineers, where he provided foundation recommendations for structures ranging from single-story dwellings to multi-story buildings.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology (1997), M.S. and B.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from Purdue University (1991, 1990), and a B.A. in Pre-Engineering from DePauw University (1990). He holds professional engineering (P.E.) credentials.
