Prof. Thomas Coulthard is a Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Hull, affiliated with the Energy and Environment Institute. He holds a PhD from the University of Leeds. His research focuses on modeling environmental systems, particularly fluvial and landscape dynamics, with expertise in flood risk management, sediment transport, and environmental change impacts.
Research Interests:
- Numerical modeling of morphodynamics in river basins
- Reduced-complexity hydrodynamic and sediment transport models
- Nonlinear systems in natural environments
Grants & Projects:
- Lead Investigator on projects addressing estuarine flooding, compound hazards, and Philippine mining impacts
- Co-Investigator on interdisciplinary water cultures and coastal flood studies
Recognition:
- Recipient of EGU Bagnold Medal (2020), Warwick Award (2005), and Vice Chancellor's Prize (2008)
Supervision: Current PhD student Chloe Carter and completed students including Jun Xie and Sergio Duran.
