Thomas Clasen is the Rose Salamone Gangarosa Professor of Environmental Health at Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health, holding joint appointments in the Gangarosa Department of Environmental Health and Hubert Department of Global Health. Previously a corporate lawyer, he earned a PhD in Environmental Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. His research focuses on household- and community-level interventions to improve water, sanitation, and air quality in low-income settings. Notable projects include the multi-country HAPIN trial assessing LPG stove health impacts and the RISE study testing wastewater treatment in urban slums. In 2025, he was named Dean's Distinguished Scholar at UC Berkeley's School of Public Health.
Research interests span air pollution exposure, safe water access, and energy transitions in global health. He has led >$45M in research funding, publishing over 270 peer-reviewed articles in top journals like The Lancet and NEJM. His work emphasizes randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and cost-effectiveness analyses of environmental interventions.
Recent studies highlight the health effects of household air pollution on maternal and child outcomes, including BMI, blood pressure, and glycated hemoglobin levels. Collaborations with WHO and multi-country trials underscore his global impact. Current projects include the CROPS initiative addressing climate-resilient agriculture in rural areas.
