Thomas C. Irving is a Professor of Biology, Physics, and Biomedical Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), affiliated with the Lewis College of Science and Letters. He serves as Director of the Biophysics Collaborative Access Team (BioCAT). His research focuses on muscle structure/function, cardiac physiology, and applications of synchrotron radiation in biophysical studies. Key collaborations include projects with Duke University, Loyola University, and the University of Arizona.
Education: Ph.D., M.Sc., and B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Guelph.
Research interests include: muscle regulation mechanisms, myofilament dynamics, and structural basis of cardiac diseases. His work employs advanced X-ray diffraction techniques to study sarcomere function and dysfunction in conditions like heart failure.
Notable awards include the Sigma Xi/IIT Award for Excellence in Research (2007). His publications emphasize myosin function, titin-based force transmission, and drug mechanisms in cardiac muscle.
Led projects on Frank-Starling Law mechanisms and nebulin's role in nemaline myopathy. Active on editorial boards of International Journal of Molecular Science.
