Dr. Thomas C Stevens is a Stipendiary Lecturer in History at Keble College, University of Oxford. His research focuses on the political and social impacts of veterans of the Russian Civil Wars in the early Soviet Union, examining how violence shaped Stalinist politics and post-war societal dynamics. He holds a BA in History and Russian from the University of Sheffield, an MPhil in Modern British and European History from St Antony’s College, Oxford, and a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania.
His current research projects include a book on the Soviet Union’s evolution post-civil wars, analyzing Tambov Province’s peasant rebellion and veterans’ reintegration. A forthcoming project explores the Soviet 'Front Generation' in power through autobiographical texts, emphasizing violence, emotions, and self-representation. He teaches courses on European history, war studies, and historiography at Keble College.
Dr. Stevens’ work bridges Soviet history with broader themes like authoritarianism, borderland dynamics, and the history of emotions. His interdisciplinary approach engages with comparative studies of post-civil war states and global imperial histories.
