Thomas Budde Christensen is an Associate Professor in Environmental Innovation at Roskilde University's Department of People and Technology. He currently serves as Head of Section for Sustainability, Cities and Planning and leads the TRANSITIONS research group on Sustainability Transitions and Environmental Planning. His work focuses on circular economy, environmental policy, and waste management, with contributions to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action, resource efficiency, and sustainable cities.
Education: PhD in Environmental Planning (2007), Cand.techn.soc. from Roskilde University (2003). Professional development includes a Research Management course at CBSExecutive (2015).
Research Interests: Circular economy frameworks, industrial ecology, sustainable business models, and policy analysis for waste reduction and resource recovery. He has led interdisciplinary projects on construction waste, plastic recycling, and healthcare sustainability.
Publications & Projects: Over 80 peer-reviewed articles and 30+ research projects, including the EU-funded 'Circular South Baltic' and 'CircleHealth' initiatives. His work bridges academic research with practical policy recommendations for local governments and industries.
Awards: National ENERGY GLOBE Award 2018 and RUC Research Communication Award 2018, recognizing contributions to environmental innovation and science communication.
Teaching & Leadership: Teaches in Sustainable Transformation and Humanities-Technology programs. Supervises projects on energy systems, biogas, and industrial symbiosis. Served as Head of CIRCLES (Circular Economy Center) and Vice-Chair of Department Councils.
Labs/Teams: Affiliated with TRANSITIONS, Center for Interdisciplinary Plastics Research, and Roskilde Environmental Plastic Society. Collaborates internationally on urban sustainability and circular policy frameworks.
