Dr. Thomas Biggs is a Lecturer in Latin at the University of St Andrews' School of Classics. He specializes in Roman literature and culture, focusing on Republican, Augustan, and early imperial periods, Latin philology, and Carthage/North Africa's cultural history. His work integrates critical theory, memory studies, gender studies, and ecopoetry. He authored Poetics of the First Punic War (2020) and co-edited The Epic Journey in Greek and Roman Literature (2019). He has published over 20 peer-reviewed articles on topics like Dido, transgender poetics in Latin, and Melinno's Hymn to Rome.
Education: PhD in Classics from Yale University (2014).
Research Interests: Latin poetry/historiography, Roman cultural history, Carthage's cultural legacy, fragments/fragmentary texts, and interdisciplinary critical theory.
Supervision: Advises four PhD students on classical topics. Collaborates on projects like reassessing Roman Republican comedic fragments and a commentary on Silius Italicus’ Punica.
Future Work: Developing a digital platform for voices in Roman literature studies, including interviews on the 'New Latin' movement.
