Dr. Thomas Biegert is an Associate Professor in International Social and Public Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Mannheim (2014) and previously worked at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. His research focuses on welfare states, labor markets, and cumulative inequality, with a strong emphasis on research methods and causal inference. He explores how institutions shape social inequalities, including studies on household joblessness, labor market transitions, and NBA status bias. His work has been published in prestigious journals like American Sociological Review and Socio-Economic Review.
Education: Ph.D. in Sociology (University of Mannheim, 2014); Diploma in Social Sciences (University of Mannheim, 2008).
Research Interests: Welfare State policies, labor market institutions, cumulative inequality mechanisms, and methodological rigor in social science research. His current projects include analyzing household joblessness in pandemic contexts, labor market trajectories of younger/older workers, and NBA award disparities as a model for cumulative status bias.
Awards: JESP/ESPAnet Doctoral Researcher Prize (2014), Lorenz von Stein Prize for best dissertation in Social Sciences (2014).
Teaching: Convenes courses on policy research methods (SP401) and the future of work and social policy (SP442). He is also a Visiting Research Fellow at Tallinn University.
Research Collaborations: Active in international projects on EU labor markets, welfare generosity, and intergenerational inequality. His work often integrates interdisciplinary approaches to address policy and social challenges.
