Thomas Biegert is an Associate Professor in International Social and Public Policy at the London School of Economics (LSE), Department of Social Policy. He joined LSE in 2017 after positions at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center and the University of Mannheim, where he earned his PhD in Sociology (2014). He holds a visiting research fellowship at Tallinn University and teaches courses on policy research and the future of work.
His research focuses on welfare states, labour markets, and cumulative inequality, with a methodological emphasis on causal inference and policy impact analysis. Key areas include the interplay of policies and institutions, household joblessness, and meritocratic disparities (e.g., NBA award dynamics).
Publications span American Sociological Review, Socio-Economic Review, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Notable work includes analyzing NBA status bias, pandemic joblessness, and welfare generosity effects. He has received the Lorenz von Stein Prize for his doctoral research on non-employment patterns.
