Associate Professor Thomas Balle is affiliated with the University of Sydney's School of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He previously worked at the University of Copenhagen, leading projects on structural approaches to ligand-gated ion channel drug discovery. His research focuses on computational and medicinal chemistry, particularly ligand-gated ion channels, drug design, and radioligand development for brain imaging.
Education: MSc Eng, PhD (industrial setting at H. Lundbeck A/S). He trained as a medicinal chemist and contributed to CNS drug design and biomarker development for PET imaging.
Research interests include ion channel structure-function relationships, fragment-based drug design, and PET radioligand development. Recent articles explore NMDA receptor mutations, P2X7 receptor structures, and GABA A receptor roles in anaesthesia and pain. He leads grants on TB drug candidates, GABA A receptor analgesics, and ion channel drug discovery consortia.
Advises students Prisca AKPABIO and Dongsheng WU. Collaborates with academic and biotech partners. Member of The Centre for Drug Discovery Innovation.
