Thinley Dema is a PhD candidate in Cultural Anthropology at Leiden University, researching the perpetuation of highland heritages in Bhutan under Dr. Erik de Maaker and Dr. Jelle Wouters. She concurrently serves as an Associate Lecturer at Royal Thimphu College, teaching in the Environmental Management program. Her work bridges environmental humanities, indigenous knowledge systems, and climate change impacts in Himalayan communities.
Education:
- MSc in Ecology and Environmental Studies, Nalanda University (Thesis: Ecological narratives and Niche modeling of cordyceps in Bhutan)
- B.A. in English and Environmental Studies, Royal Thimphu College
Research Interests: Focuses on cultural resilience, more-than-human worlds, and the entanglement of spirituality with environmental stewardship. Recent projects include investigating lake personhood in Bhutan and the role of indigenous ecological knowledge in climate adaptation.
Teaching: Teaches Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at both BSc and MSc levels, emphasizing participatory methodologies and Himalayan case studies.
Grants & Projects: Involved in projects like “Symbiotic Indigeneity, Changing Commons, and Sustainable Intelligence” under the Himalayan Centre for Environmental Humanities. Prior roles include Research Associate on water policy and gender resilience in Himalayan cities.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams mapping Bhutan’s highland heritage and documenting traditional ecological knowledge systems.
