Elena Neri is a Research Fellow in the Department of Nutrition and Public Health within the Faculty of Health and Sports Sciences at the University of Agder. Her work centers on the EATWELL project, a radically interdisciplinary study of food systems and more-than-human health in Bhutan.
Her educational background includes an MA in Anthropology of Food from SOAS University of London (2021-2022) and a BSc in Food Marketing & Business Economics from the University of Reading (2015-2019). Prior to her PhD, she worked as a Senior Research Assistant on the 'Food, with Care' project at the University of Hertfordshire and as a plant-based food product developer.
Neri's research explores food as a lens for understanding social inequalities, human-nonhuman relationships in the Anthropocene, and health systems. Her work bridges anthropology, nutrition science, and environmental studies through multispecies ethnography and sensory methodologies. Current fieldwork focuses on Western Bhutan's food systems, examining how local practices intersect with ecological health and spiritual traditions.
Her recent publications reveal a strong focus on non-Western food environments, with significant contributions to Himalayan anthropology and urban foodscapes. Key themes include sensory ethnography of Sicilian markets, commercial determinants in pediatric hospital food systems, and Bhutanese environmental spirituality.
Neri actively participates in collaborative research networks including the Centre for the Social Study of Microbes and the Centre for Lifecourse Nutrition. Her fieldwork integrates community engagement with theoretical innovation in more-than-human health frameworks.
