Thierry de Duve is the Evelyn Kranes Kossak Professor in the Department of Art History at Hunter College, City University of New York. His work bridges art history, philosophy, and critical theory, with a focus on the transformation of the institution of art during the modernist era (1860–1960). He challenges traditional art-historical frameworks by proposing a shift from the Beaux-Arts system to an Art-in-General paradigm, emphasizing the epistemological implications of Duchamp's legacy.
De Duve's research explores the interplay between art and aesthetics, particularly through the lens of Kant and Duchamp. He critiques medium-specificity in modernism and advocates for a re-evaluation of art history's foundational assumptions. His publications include groundbreaking works like Pictorial Nominalism (1991) and Kant After Duchamp (1996), which interrogate the ontological and ethical dimensions of art.
- Key themes: Modernism, avant-garde, Duchamp, feminism, Kantian aesthetics.
- Ongoing work: Volume Two of Aesthetics at Large and Duchamp’s Telegram (2023).
His methodological approach prioritizes extracting theory from artworks rather than applying external theories. He also engages with diverse topics such as the French Salon, Lacan, Adorno, and contemporary feminist art practices.
