Thiago Oliveira is a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Manchester. Previously, he held positions at the University of Surrey (2022/23) and Nuffield College, Oxford (2021/22). He holds a PhD in Social Research Methods from the London School of Economics. His research focuses on policing’s dual objectives of crime deterrence and public legitimacy, with emphasis on confrontational tactics, police use-of-force, and procedural justice theory. Methodologically, he specializes in quantitative approaches including causal inference and longitudinal data analysis. Affiliations include Harvard University’s Sociology Department and the Center for the Study of Violence at USP. Awards include Fellowship with the Royal Statistical Society. His work addresses policing in global contexts like Brazil, Chicago, and London, examining legal cynicism, stop-and-search policies, and socio-spatial inequality.
Education: PhD in Social Research Methods (LSE), Postdoctoral work at Nuffield College. Research interests include: Implications of policing exposure, procedural justice theory, policy evaluation of stop-and-search, and quantitative methods. Collaborations span multi-cohort studies like the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN+).
