Therese Monstad is a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor at the Department of Informatics and Media, Faculty of Social Sciences, Uppsala University. She serves as assistant head of department responsible for the department's education. Her academic work focuses on organizational communication, change- and crisis communication, and digitalization processes in organizations.
Monstad's research centers on the communicative constitution of organizations with particular emphasis on how tensions inherent in participatory processes contribute to organizational formation and change. Her work explores communication at the boundary between digital and physical spaces, examining how these interactions shape organizational structures and processes. She has conducted significant studies mapping and contributing to curbing the spread of COVID-19 in Uppsala County through the CRUSH Covid project, and researched digital transformation of physical spaces through the TROPHY project.
Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent theoretical and practical focus on organizational communication in the digital era. Key trends include examining how communication constitutes organizational reality, the role of tensions in organizational change, and innovative approaches to communication during crises. Her work bridges theoretical frameworks like the Communicative Constitution of Organizations (CCO) with practical applications in change management and digital transformation.
Monstad has led significant research projects including CRUSH Covid (2020-2022), a multidisciplinary effort to survey and control local COVID-19 outbreaks in Uppsala County involving collaboration between five academic departments and Uppsala Region. She also directed the TROPHY project (2018-2021), which developed knowledge and tools to facilitate communication at the boundary between digital and physical spaces. As assistant head of department, she plays a key role in shaping educational programs and curriculum development at the Department of Informatics and Media.
