Therese Fridström Montoya is a Senior Lecturer in Civil Law and Docent in Public Law at Uppsala University's Department of Law, where she combines legal expertise with sociological perspectives. She currently serves as part-time director of the Centre for Disability Research since 2023 and holds the Ragnar Söderberg Researcher position in Legal Science.
Her educational background includes a Juris Doctor in Public Law (2015), Law Degree (2000), and Master of Social Work (1998). Her research centers on the intersection of law and disability, examining how legal systems address mental health conditions, intellectual disabilities, and capacity issues.
Fridström Montoya's work reveals critical gaps between Sweden's ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and actual legal implementation, particularly regarding representation mechanisms for people with disabilities. Her publications analyze historical legislation like the 1924 Mental Disorder Act alongside contemporary challenges in legal capacity determination.
