Theresa N. Kinard

Dr. Theresa N. Kinard is a Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. She serves as Associate Chair for Education in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology and Co-Chair of the Education Committee. Her clinical expertise spans Blood Banking, Coagulation and Hemostasis, and Laboratory Management.

Dr. Kinard's research interests focus on transfusion medicine, particularly in the areas of blood banking, coagulation disorders, and laboratory management. Her work has significantly contributed to understanding phosphatidylethanol metabolism in transfusion recipients, therapeutic plasma exchange applications, and novel approaches to treating rare blood disorders. She has pioneered research on the implications of red blood cell transfusion on alcohol biomarker testing and developed innovative therapeutic approaches for complex hemoglobinopathies.

Her educational background includes a Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio (2009), followed by residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology with Chief Resident status at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (2013), and a Clinical Fellowship in Transfusion Medicine at the same institution (2014). She is board-certified in both Anatomic & Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine by the American Board of Pathology.
