Theo Fotis is a Professor at the University of Brighton's School of Sport & Health Sciences and Assistant Director Outreach of the Centre for Secure, Intelligent and Usable Systems (CSIUS). He holds a PhD from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). As Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Anaesthetic and Recovery Nursing (BJARN), he contributes to nursing and healthcare informatics. His roles include Academic Lead of the Brighton and Hove Digital Health Living Lab, which focuses on co-creating health innovations with citizens and industry.
His research interests center on Digital Health technologies, cybersecurity in healthcare, and co-production of innovation through Living Labs. He has led projects such as EMPOWERCARE (funded by Interreg2Seas) and INNOVATEDIGNITY-ITN (EU Horizon 2020). He is also a visiting researcher at Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s School of Nursing and an evaluator for funding bodies like EPSRC and the Hong Kong Research Grants Council.
Fotis has been recognized as one of the Top 50 Healthcare IT Leaders in Europe (HIMSS Europe, 2018) and advocates for digital nursing, a term he coined in 2015. His work emphasizes cybersecurity in IoT and cloud computing, and he teaches Digital Technologies in Healthcare Delivery at the postgraduate level. He actively contributes to international committees, including the HIMSS International TIGER Task Force and the Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society.
His research outputs span over 60 peer-reviewed articles and include studies on eHealth in palliative care, cybersecurity in NHS virtual wards, and AI-driven healthcare solutions. He supervises PhD students in Digital Health, privacy, and technology evaluation.
