Theo Cateforis is an Associate Professor of Music History and Cultures at Syracuse University’s College of Arts & Sciences. He serves as Director of Undergraduate Studies in Music History & Cultures and Fine Arts. His research focuses on rock music, popular culture, and film music, particularly exploring 1990s alternative rock, teen movies, and gender dynamics in music. Cateforis holds a Ph.D. in Music History from Stony Brook University (2000). He has authored books like *The Rock History Reader* (2019) and *Are We Not New Wave?* (2011).
- Education: Ph.D., SUNY Stony Brook (2000); M.A. and B.A., SUNY Binghamton (1993, 1990).
Research interests include rock genres like new wave, post-punk, and riot grrrl, as well as the intersection of music and film. His recent work examines 1990s alternative rock and its cultural impact. He has presented widely at conferences, including the American Musicological Society and International Association for the Study of Popular Music.
Awards include a Humanities Center Faculty Fellowship (2023) and recognition from Syracuse University’s Center for Disability Resources (2020).
