Jan Butler is a Senior Lecturer in Popular Music at the School of Arts, Oxford Brookes University. Her expertise spans popular musicology and film musicology, focusing on ideologies of authenticity in popular music, record production analysis, and the cultural connotations of music in film.

Her teaching includes modules on popular music history/analysis and film music studies. She has supervised PhD projects on topics such as Radiohead's genre evolution, religious discrimination in the music industry, and New Romantics culture.
Her research has been disseminated through international conferences, including the Sound on Screen series, and her work on 60s rock (e.g., Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix) examines media, industry, and authenticity dynamics.
