Prof. Theo Bouman is an Associate Professor (emeritus) at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences, affiliated with the Clinical Psychology and Experimental Psychopathology department. His research focuses on anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, somatoform disorders, and cross-cultural clinical psychology, with expertise in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) adaptations. He previously led the postmaster healthcare psychologist training programme at PPO Groningen.
Research interests include evaluating cultural adaptations of therapeutic interventions, transdiagnostic factors in mental health, and refugee mental health. Recent work examines gaps between psychological theory and clinical practice, cross-cultural CBT efficacy, and long-term outcomes of interventions for Syrian refugees. He has contributed to chapters in major textbooks like Klinische psychologie: Theorieën en psychopathologie and Oxford Textbook of Psychopathology.
Bouman has been widely cited in media discussions about anxiety, hypochondria, and societal perceptions of beauty. His articles often analyze clinical practice gaps and mental health interventions in diverse populations.
Supervised students include PhD candidates working on topics like Mexican psychometric adaptations and transdiagnostic symptom overlaps. He remains active in training programs and has advised on healthcare policies for post-traumatic stress interventions.
