Dr. Thangarajah Akilan serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Software Engineering at Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Canada, having joined in September 2019. He teaches courses across Software Engineering (ESOF-0151, ESOF-4011, ESOF-4559, ESOF-4969, ESOF-5033, ESOF-5052, ESOF-5036) and Computer Science (COMP-5421, COMP-1411, COMP-5413, COMP-5800, COMP-4312, COMP-2430) departments.
His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Windsor, Canada.
Dr. Akilan's research spans computer vision, deep learning, and natural language processing with specific focus on object detection, action recognition, image/video processing, segmentation, and information fusion. His work develops intelligent systems through advanced machine learning techniques for real-world data analysis applications.
He leads the Vision Intelligence and Data Lab and actively supervises student projects including degree and graduate projects. Dr. Akilan contributes to academic service as an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology and reviewer for multiple IEEE Transactions journals, while maintaining IEEE volunteer roles including past secretary positions for Windsor and Winnipeg sections.
