Dr. Thamarai Janganan is a Senior Lecturer in Medical Microbiology at the Department of Natural Sciences, Middlesex University, London. His academic journey includes a PhD in Molecular Microbiology from Durham University (2008) and postdoctoral roles at Durham, Sheffield, and Essex Universities. He specializes in antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, particularly focusing on multidrug efflux pumps in Gram-negative bacteria. His research spans bacterial spore structures, CAMP signaling pathways, and biofilm formation.
Thamarai leads the MSc Biomedical Science (Medical Microbiology) and BSc Applied Biomedical Science programs. He collaborates with clinical placement providers like NHS BT and IBMS to enhance student training. He teaches modules such as Medical Microbiology, Infection & Immunity, and Control of Infectious Diseases.
His research interests include efflux pump mechanisms (RND/MATE), bacterial spore surface proteins, and fungal pathogen biology. Recent studies involve Vibrio cholerae transporters and Coniothyrium minitans biocontrol agents. He actively presents at international conferences on topics like ‘Pumping Antibiotics’ and ‘Bacterial Honeycombs’.
Thamarai holds fellowships from the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and IBMS (FIBMS), and was nominated for the 2023 Middlesex University Student-Led Teaching Award. He serves as a reviewer for MDPI journals and external examiner for UK and international universities.
