Teun Tieleman is a Professor of History of Philosophy at Utrecht University's Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. His work focuses on ancient medicine, Stoicism, Galen of Pergamum, and the intersection of philosophy with early Christianity. He has held visiting positions at Cambridge, UCLA, and Humboldt University, Berlin. His research includes projects funded by NWO and the Anchoring Innovation program.
Education: PhD in Classics and Philosophy from Utrecht University (1992), studies at Nijmegen and secondary education roles prior to returning to Utrecht in 2001.
Research Interests: Galen’s medical philosophy, Stoic theories of emotion, ancient medicine’s links to religion, and the reception of ancient philosophy in early Christian texts. Key works include Chrysippus’ On Affections (2003) and Galen on Human Nature (forthcoming).
Grants: Directed the NWO-funded project 'Human Nature: Medical and Philosophical Perspectives in Galen' (2015-2021). Member of the Anchoring Innovation program’s governing board.
Labs/Teams: Leading the Galen Project, collaborating with international scholars on conferences and publications. Advised PhD students like Robert Vinkesteijn.
