Teruhisa Masada is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Russ College of Engineering and Technology, Ohio University. He has held this position for over 25 years and is affiliated with the Ohio Research Institute for Transportation and the Environment (ORITE). His research focuses on geotechnical engineering, transportation infrastructure, and buried structure performance. He has authored/co-authored 50 technical papers and 25 reports, and serves as an associate editor for ASCE's Journal of Pipeline Systems Engineering and Practice.
Research Interests: soil-structure interaction (buried structures), shallow foundations, pavement material testing, and in-situ/laboratory soil-rock analysis. His work emphasizes field performance evaluation of thermoplastic pipes, metal culverts, and stormwater chamber systems. Key contributions include long-term studies on Ohio's infrastructure and innovative rehabilitation techniques for deteriorated culverts.
Publications span structural analysis, material durability, and risk assessment methodologies. Notable projects include the Pennsylvania Thermoplastic Pipe Deep Burial Study and forensic analysis of collapsed culverts. Awards include the 2010-11 Best Research Paper from Ohio University's Civil Engineering Department.
His work integrates field experimentation with computational modeling, addressing challenges in highway embankment stability, soil-structure interaction, and sustainable infrastructure solutions. He collaborates with state departments of transportation and industry partners on applied research projects.
