Terry Sicular is a Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Western Ontario. He holds a Ph.D. from Yale University (1983). His research focuses on China's economy, economic development, income distribution, inequality, and poverty. He has authored numerous publications analyzing structural changes in China's economy, rural-urban disparities, and the evolution of China’s middle class.
Teaching includes courses on the Economics of China (ECON 3311F), Senior Research Seminar in Economics (ECON 4400E), and Economic Development I (ECON 3324G). His academic contributions span policy analysis, household surveys (e.g., CHIP 2007), and cross-national comparisons of socioeconomic dynamics.
Notable works include China’s Prosperous Middle Class and Consumption-Led Economic Growth (2024) and Changing Trends in China’s Inequality (2020). His research often integrates longitudinal data to assess long-term structural shifts and policy impacts on inequality and poverty reduction.
He has advised on projects related to rural welfare programs (e.g., Dibao) and educational reforms. His work frequently highlights the interplay between structural economic changes and socio-economic outcomes in China.
