Terry Plank is the Arthur D. Storke Memorial Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO), and Director of Undergraduate Studies. Her research focuses on volatile cycling in magmas, subduction zone processes, and magma dynamics. She has conducted fieldwork in Alaska, Nicaragua, Italy, and at sea, emphasizing geochemical and petrological methods.
Education: A.B. in Earth Sciences from Dartmouth College (1985); Ph.D. in Geosciences from Columbia University (1993).
Research interests include the geochemical evolution of magmas, volcanic eruptions, and the role of volatiles (e.g., water, CO₂, sulfur) in subduction zones. Her work integrates laboratory analysis (e.g., FT-IR spectroscopy, ion microprobe) with field observations to trace magma ascent rates and storage conditions.
Awards include membership in the US National Academy of Sciences and American Academy of Arts and Sciences, plus fellowships in the American Geophysical Union and Geological Society of America. Her contributions bridge fundamental geochemistry with applied studies of volcanic hazards and Earth's volatile cycles.
Plank leads studies on magma storage depths, eruption triggers, and the global sulfur budget. She has pioneered techniques for measuring volatile contents in melt inclusions and mantle xenoliths, advancing understanding of magma dynamics and subduction zone processes.
