Peter Kelemen is the Arthur D. Storke Professor and Chair of the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences at Columbia University, affiliated with the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. His research focuses on fluid-rock interactions and Earth's chemical-physical processes with current emphasis on carbon capture solutions.
His educational background includes:
- AB from Dartmouth College (1980)
- PhD from the University of Washington (1987)
Kelemen's expertise spans geochemistry, petrology, and geodynamics, investigating crustal evolution, subduction zones, and earthquake mechanisms. His present work pioneers reaction-driven cracking for carbon capture, geothermal energy, and mineral extraction applications.
His distinguished honors include:
- Election to the National Academy of Sciences
- Fellow of the American Geophysical Union
- Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America
- Fellow of the Geochemical Society
He teaches Columbia courses on Earth Resources for Sustainable Development, petrology, and geodynamics. As founding partner of Dihedral Exploration (1980-1992), he consulted on mineral exploration in challenging terrains across Canada, Alaska, and Greenland. His fieldwork spans Peru, India, Oman, Pakistan's high-altitude regions, and deep-sea Mid-Atlantic Ridge expeditions.
After 16 years at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, he joined Columbia's Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory in 2004, maintaining active research leadership.
