Terry Humphries

Terry Humphries is a Senior Research Fellow at Curtin University, affiliated with the School of Electrical Engineering, Computing, and Mathematical Sciences (EECMS) and the Department of Physics and Astronomy. He holds a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry and has over 17 years of expertise in hydrogen storage materials and thermochemical energy storage systems. His research focuses on developing novel metal hydrides and composite materials for applications such as thermal batteries and solid-state hydrogen storage. Terry leads the Hydrogen Storage Research Group and has been instrumental in winning two Curtinnovation Awards: the 2022 award for 'Hydrogen export as a powder' and the 2019 award for 'Thermal Batteries.' He also secured a $1.5M Global Innovations Linkage Grant in 2019 to advance solar thermal energy storage systems.

His work spans materials synthesis, characterization using advanced techniques like X-ray and neutron diffraction, and NMR spectroscopy. Key research areas include complex hydrides, thermal energy storage systems, and the optimization of metal hydride reactors. Terry’s contributions have led to advancements in high-temperature thermal batteries and sustainable energy solutions. He collaborates widely, evidenced by his extensive publication record in journals like ChemPhysChem, Energy, and ACS Applied Energy Materials.

Academic roles include membership in the Office of the Provost, reflecting his administrative involvement. Teaching areas span Science and Engineering disciplines at Curtin University. His research group actively explores cutting-edge materials for energy storage, aiming to bridge gaps between fundamental science and industrial applications.
