Professor Craig Buckley is a John Curtin Distinguished Professor in Physics and Astronomy at Curtin University, leading the Hydrogen Storage Research Group (HSRG). He holds positions in the School of Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. His research focuses on hydrogen storage materials, energy storage systems, and structure determination using advanced scattering techniques.
He has held roles including Deputy Dean of Research, Director of the Fuels and Energy Technology Institute, and leadership in international energy initiatives like the IEA Hydrogen Technology Collaboration Program. Buckley has secured over $150M in research funding and published over 250 peer-reviewed papers with 10,000+ citations. His honors include Fellow of the Australian Institute of Physics (2009) and multiple Curtinnovation Awards for hydrogen-related innovations.
Research highlights include developing thermochemical energy storage systems, advancing magnesium and calcium hydrides for thermal batteries, and leading global collaborations on hydrogen storage. His group's work on hydrogen export as a powder and thermal battery prototypes has significant industry impact. Buckley also supervises students across Honours and PhD levels, contributing to education in applied physics and nanotechnology.
Awards and recognitions underscore his leadership, including chairing the 17th International Symposium on Metal-Hydrogen Systems (MH2022) and serving on international steering committees. His interdisciplinary approach bridges materials science, energy systems, and environmental sustainability.
