Terry Heiman-Patterson

Terry Heiman-Patterson is a Professor in the Department of Neurology at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, Temple University, where she also serves as Director of the Temple MDA/ALS Center of Hope. Her clinical expertise spans neuromuscular medicine, with a focus on ALS, motor neuron diseases, myasthenia, inflammatory myopathies, and hereditary and acquired peripheral neuropathies.

Her research is dedicated to advancing understanding and treatment of ALS, with key interests in autonomic, pulmonary, and cognitive aspects of the disease, the development of brain-computer interfaces for patient communication and independence, clinical trials, tissue banking, biomarker discovery, genetic modifiers, and the intersection of ALS with post-traumatic encephalopathy. Her work emphasizes multidisciplinary care and innovative assistive technologies, as highlighted in media collaborations with 6ABC and Temple Health.

Dr. Heiman-Patterson has been recognized with the Forbes Norris Award (2017) and has been listed in Best Doctors in America® for Neurology (2017-2020). She is an active member of the Northeast ALS Consortium (serving as Chair of the Abstract Committee), the ALS Research Group, the American Academy of Neurology, and the American Neurologic Association.

She leads a comprehensive clinical and research program at the Temple MDA/ALS Center of Hope, fostering a team-based approach to patient care and participating in national research initiatives aimed at improving outcomes for individuals with ALS and related disorders.
