James Grogan, MD, MS, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at the Penn State College of Medicine, specializing in neuromuscular medicine and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He is affiliated with the Penn State Neuroscience Institute and the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center's multidisciplinary ALS clinic. His clinical interests include ALS, myasthenia gravis, neuropathies, and inflammatory myopathies, alongside telemedicine and palliative care integration.
Education: MD from Indiana University School of Medicine (2010-2014), MS in Biology (Indiana University-Purdue University, 2009-2010), and residency in Neurology (Indiana University School of Medicine, 2015-2018). He completed a neuromuscular medicine fellowship at the University of Virginia Health System (2018-2019).
Research focuses on ALS treatments, telemedicine applications in neurology, and patient-reported outcome measures. He has led studies on memantine and arimoclomol for ALS, and published on virtual ALS clinic models during the pandemic.
Recipient of the Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching (2021, 2023). Active in clinical trials and multidisciplinary care delivery, emphasizing palliative services and interprofessional collaboration.
