Dr. Tahseen Mozaffar is a board-certified Professor in the Department of Neurology at UC Irvine School of Medicine. He serves as Director of the UCI Health ALS & Neuromuscular Center, one of only six Muscular Dystrophy Association-designated centers in California. Additionally, he directs the annual UCI Neuromuscular Colloquia and Neuromuscular Pathology Colloquium, and is a member of the Myositis Association Medical Advisory Board.
Dr. Mozaffar received his medical degree from Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan, where he also completed a rotating internship in internal medicine and general surgery. He then completed his neurology residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, followed by a fellowship in neuromuscular disorders at Washington University, also in St. Louis.
Dr. Mozaffar specializes in neuromuscular disorders, with clinical expertise in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), myasthenia gravis, inflammatory myopathies, Pompe disease, muscle pathology, and all types of muscular dystrophies. His research focuses on clinical and translational studies of neuromuscular disorders, with emphasis on rare and ultra-rare myopathies. He has served as principal site investigator for over a dozen clinical trials targeting myasthenia gravis, immune myopathies, and rare myopathies.
Dr. Mozaffar's extensive publication record includes over 175 peer-reviewed articles spanning neuromuscular diseases, clinical trial methodologies, and therapeutic innovations. His recent work shows a strong focus on emerging therapies including CAR T-cell treatments for autoimmune neuromuscular conditions, novel enzyme replacement therapies for Pompe disease, and adaptive platform trials for ALS.

As a leading expert in rare neuromuscular disorders, Dr. Mozaffar serves as the lead UCI investigator for NeuroNEXT, a national collaborative effort to streamline phase 2 clinical trials for brain disorders funded by NINDS. He advises multiple pharmaceutical companies on clinical trial design and disease target identification, serving on Pompe disease advisory boards for Amicus Therapeutics and Spark Therapeutics, as well as data safety monitoring boards for Acceleron and Sarepta Therapeutics. He is also a reviewer with the NIH's Emerging Technologies and Training in Neurosciences group.
Dr. Mozaffar directs the UCI Health ALS & Neuromuscular Center, which functions as a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care, research, and education in neuromuscular medicine. The center participates in numerous clinical trials and serves as a regional referral center for complex neuromuscular cases.
