Terri Francis is an Associate Professor of Cinematic Arts at the University of Miami, bringing twenty years of film exhibition experience to her role. She develops events exploring archives and moving images through the lens of global black film history.
Dr. Francis specializes in Black film history and aesthetics, with research spanning film archives, film feelings, and performance representation across global contexts. Her work critically examines Jamaican nontheatrical films, Afrosurrealism, and cinematic legacies like Josephine Baker's.
Her 2021 monograph 'Josephine Baker’s Cinematic Prism' anchors her scholarly output, reflecting consistent focus on race, gender, and archival practices in cinema. Additional publications include analyses of Jamaican film units and guest-edited journals on Afrosurrealism.
As former Director of Indiana University's Black Film Center/Archive, she secured Paulin Soumanou Vieyra's papers and launched initiatives like the 'Black Film Nontheatrical' speaker series and visiting fellow programs, engaging diverse academic communities.
Dr. Francis cultivated significant partnerships with ARRAY, IU Cinema, and #DirectedbyWomen to host scholars including Cheryl Dunye and Kevin Jerome Everson, demonstrating collaborative leadership in film curation and preservation.
