Teri Chettiar is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Illinois, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Her research focuses on the history of the human sciences, particularly how 20th-century understandings of mental and emotional health intersected with marginalized identities and social reforms. She holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University (2013).
Her work includes the book The Intimate State: How Emotional Life Became Political in Welfare-State Britain (2022), which explores how British welfare initiatives shaped emotional norms. Current projects address intergenerational trauma and ADHD diagnosis disparities across the US, Canada, and the UK.
