Teri Chettiar

Teri Chettiar is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Illinois, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Her research focuses on the history of the human sciences, particularly how 20th-century understandings of mental and emotional health intersected with marginalized identities and social reforms. She holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University (2013).

Her work includes the book The Intimate State: How Emotional Life Became Political in Welfare-State Britain (2022), which explores how British welfare initiatives shaped emotional norms. Current projects address intergenerational trauma and ADHD diagnosis disparities across the US, Canada, and the UK.

Key research areas include Modern Britain and Europe, gender/sexuality studies, and the intersection of science, technology, and medicine with empire. Her articles appear in journals like History of the Human Sciences and Journal of British Studies.
