Terhi Esko is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Law, where she works at the Legal Tech Lab. She is actively engaged in the multidisciplinary project 'Digital Administration Redesigned for Everyone' (DARE), which examines the intersection of technology, law, and society with a focus on the digitalization of the Finnish court system. Her work bridges socio-legal studies, social sciences, and computer science to investigate how technological design impacts legal rights and how law should inform technological development in administration.
Her research interests span legal technology, changing practices of legal work, and the social impact of research. With a theoretical foundation in Science and Technology Studies (STS), Esko examines how digital technologies reshape legal work, lawmaking processes, and administrative governance. She has published extensively on topics including digital administration, socio-legal studies, educational sciences, and sociology, with recent work focusing on legal tech design, inclusive lawmaking, and the relationship between citizens and digital public power. Her publications reveal a strong interdisciplinary approach that connects law, technology, and social sciences to address contemporary challenges in digital governance.
Esko is an active contributor to academic discourse, participating in numerous conferences and workshops, and serves on the board of the Finnish Society for Science and Technology Studies. She has been involved in significant research projects including DARE (2021-2026), Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions research secondment (2018), and various studies on university-society relationships and science policy. Her work demonstrates a consistent commitment to understanding how academic research creates social impact, particularly in the context of digital transformation in legal and administrative systems.
