Terhi Ainiala is a Professor at the Department of Finno-Ugric and Nordic Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of Helsinki. She is also affiliated with the Finnish Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) and the Institute for Urban Studies (Urbaria).

Her research focuses on onomastics (the study of names) and urban studies, with specializations in Finnish onomastics, socio-onomastics, and urban linguistic landscapes. She explores how place names reflect cultural identity, sustainability, and social dynamics in Nordic and Uralic contexts.
Recent publications address topics like Nordic socio-onomastics, urban name fixations, and multilingual practices in cities. She has received the Helsinki Science Award (2019) and been recognized for Best Article of the Year (2023).
She actively participates in international conferences, peer review activities, and serves on the board of the Finnish Publishers' Association. Her work connects linguistic heritage with contemporary urban planning and policy-making.
