Teresa Pepe is a Professor of Middle East Studies at the University of Oslo, affiliated with the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages. Her research focuses on Arabic literature, digital cultures, and environmental humanities. She holds a PhD from the University of Oslo (2014) and has conducted postdoctoral research on Arab intellectual history and media transitions. Pepe has been a visiting scholar at institutions including the American University in Cairo and the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo. She co-founded the Arab Media Transitions research network and received a MECAM Fellowship in 2021 for her work on climate fiction in Arabic literature.
Her academic interests include Arab futurism, ecocriticism, and the interplay between aesthetics and politics. Key publications include Blogging From Egypt: Digital Literature (2005-2016) (2019) and articles on climate change in Arabic dystopian fiction. Pepe teaches courses on Middle Eastern literature, media studies, and cultural history. Current research projects explore environmental imaginaries in Egyptian and Tunisian literature and the impact of media transitions on Arab cultural production.
Scientific awards include the MECAM Fellowship (2021). She has advised multiple research projects and contributed to interdisciplinary initiatives like the Environmental Humanities cluster. Pepe collaborates with institutions globally and publishes in journals such as Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication and Oriente Moderno.
