Teresa Murphy is Professor of American Studies and Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at The George Washington University. She is affiliated with the Department of American Studies within the College of Arts and Sciences, where her teaching and research focus on U.S. cultural and women’s history, particularly in the pre-twentieth century era.

Her research investigates how gender conventions were challenged and reshaped through religious revivals, labor movements, and reform efforts in early America. She explores the intersections of gender, race, class, and empire in shaping women’s roles and historical narratives. Her work also examines the emergence of women’s history as a literary and political genre during the early republic.
Prof. Murphy has directed several graduate dissertations on topics such as citizenship practices, Native American policy, visual culture, and eugenics. She co-teaches a graduate seminar on Gender and Sexuality and is involved in shaping graduate education in cultural and women’s history.

Professional Service and Collaboration:
She is currently collaborating with Barbara Clark Smith, Curator at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, on a project titled The Material Life of Political Culture, which aims to inform museum exhibits and collecting strategies. This reflects her engagement with public history and material culture.

As Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, she plays a key administrative role in shaping academic policy and initiatives at GWU.
