Ryan Murphy is an Associate Professor of History at Earlham College, with cross-departmental affiliations in Peace and Global Studies and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and a B.A. from Macalester College. His research focuses on labor history, the history of sexuality, urban history, and intellectual history, with a current project exploring union activists’ relationships with kinship and family in mid-20th century U.S. cities. His book Deregulating Desire won the 2017 David Montgomery Award for Best Book in Labor History.
Dr. Murphy founded a queer arts and cultural center in Minneapolis during his graduate studies and remains active in queer cultural movements. Before academia, he worked as a flight attendant and now collects mid-20th century airline memorabilia. He is committed to interdisciplinary teaching at Earlham, emphasizing intellectual freedom and boundary-crossing scholarship.
