Teresa Faris is a Professor of Art and Design at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where she teaches metalsmithing, jewelry design, and 3D Foundations courses in the Greenhill Center of the Arts. Her work emphasizes storytelling through objects, cultural connections, and ethical material practices rooted in ancient human traditions.
Her research spans Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design with deep focus on Indigenous Art and Craft traditions dating to 38,000 BC. She critically examines Cultural Appropriation, Intellectual Property, and Ethical Sourcing in art, while exploring how personal history shapes cultural understanding through object-making. Students develop visual literacy by analyzing historical and contemporary works across global contexts.
Faris mentors undergraduate students in hands-on studio work, fostering resilience and authentic creative expression. Her metal studio features traditional tools where students craft unique pieces—from intricate wire necklaces to copper-brass sculptures—while engaging with ethical dilemmas in art. During the pandemic, she maintained consistent support through active listening and tailored challenges, emphasizing student agency in overcoming obstacles.
