She teaches sociology of education, curriculum theory, and climate change education through critical pedagogy frameworks that challenge power structures in educational systems.
Her academic credentials include:
- Bachelor of Secondary Education (Physics/Mathematics) - University of Alberta
- Master of Education (Curriculum and Instruction) - University of New Brunswick
- PhD (Curriculum and Learning) - University of Calgary
Dr. Fowler's research critically examines hegemonic masculinity in elite hockey using qualitative 'studying up' methodologies. She investigates how power systems perpetuate toxic norms across sport and educational contexts, with collaborations spanning Hockey Canada, community sport organizations, and parliamentary committees. Her work uniquely connects gender equity, mental health impacts, and institutionalized cultural grooming in athletic environments.
She received significant recognition as one of 100 game changers by The Hockey News for research transforming national conversations about masculinity in sports.
Dr. Fowler actively partners with national sport bodies through workshops like the Concordia Men's hockey team mask project, where players document internal/external pressures of toxic masculinity. Her community-engaged approach directly informs cultural change initiatives with Hockey Canada while mentoring future educators in power-conscious leadership practices.
