Dr. Ted McAvoy is an Assistant Professor & Vegetable Production Extension Specialist in the Department of Horticulture at the University of Georgia's College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences (CAES), based at the Tifton Campus. His research focuses on vegetable production systems, emphasizing disease resistance, irrigation, fertilizer strategies, and alternative crops. He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Horticulture from the University of Florida and a Ph.D. in Horticulture from Virginia Tech. His extension program aims to enhance productivity, sustainability, and profitability for Georgia's vegetable industry through applied field research and data-driven recommendations.
Key affiliations include the South Georgia Vegetables Lab and UGA Extension, where he contributes to initiatives like the Vegetable Extension and Research Report series. His work spans cucurbitaceae (watermelon, squash, cucumber), solanaceous crops (tomato, bell pepper), and leafy greens. Recent research highlights include studies on whitefly-transmitted viruses, nematode management, and cover crop impacts on soil health. Collaborations involve county and regional extension agents to translate findings into actionable grower strategies.
