Tatiana Alvares-Sanches

Dr Tatiana Alvares-Sanches is a Lecturer in Data Science at Newcastle University's School of Computing, where she also serves as Director of the Degree Apprenticeship in Data Analytics and a member of the Programme Management Board for the CDT Geospatial Systems. Previously, she held roles as a Research Associate in Geographical Information Science at the University of Leicester and an EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellow at the University of Southampton. Her PhD focused on geospatial analysis, and she has taught GIS at the University of Southampton. Prior to academia, she worked for six years as a qualified architect.

Her research integrates geospatial analysis, urban analytics, and environmental data science to explore complex urban systems. Key interests include modeling urban interactions (e.g., air/noise pollution, heat, and transportation flows), IoT-driven environmental monitoring for urban optimization, and data visualization for impactful communication. She emphasizes the built environment's architectural and health dimensions, advocating for energy-efficient and healthier urban design.

Dr Alvares-Sanches teaches modules such as Data Science in the Wild and Practical Machine Learning for Data Analytics. She has been recognized with the EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her work bridges engineering, environmental science, and data science to address urban sustainability challenges.
