Mia Alvar is a Filipino-American author and educator affiliated with Columbia University’s School of the Arts, where she taught fiction and earned her MFA. Her work explores themes of cultural identity, immigration, and diaspora through literary fiction. She has held residencies at Yaddo, Djerassi Resident Artists Program, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and Blue Mountain Center for the Arts.
Alvar’s research interests center on transnational storytelling and postcolonial narratives, reflected in her award-winning story collection In the Country. Her writing has appeared in prominent literary journals including The New York Times Book Review, One Story, and The Missouri Review.
Her accolades include the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize, Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize, and Barnes & Noble Discover Award. She has received prestigious fellowships from Sewanee, Bread Loaf, and Sirenland Writers’ Conferences. Born in the Philippines and raised in Bahrain and New York, Alvar currently resides in southern California.
